URBAN CLIMATE INSTITUTE · SPATIAL ANALYSIS
Between the city,
fields and forest.
Međimurje shows why a settlement’s thermal pattern needs to be read alongside its wider landscape. Čakovec, smaller villages and agricultural land create different conditions over short distances.
An original working view from the Međimurje archive. The wider extent connects settlements, fields and woodland; colours are not used here to read exact temperatures.
01 — THE WIDER LANDSCAPE
Green on a map does not
always mean shade for people.
Agricultural land can produce a strong vegetation signal without shading a pedestrian. Crops, lawns and mature tree canopies are different forms of vegetation with different roles.
We therefore interpret satellite layers alongside land use and season. A field after harvest, an active crop and woodland can display very different thermal patterns. One image cannot establish how a surface behaves throughout summer.
Different patterns across developed land, fields and vegetation help focus attention on individual streets and public spaces. These views do not have a verified common numerical scale.
02 — FROM MAP TO SITE
Where is shade needed most?
For a municipality, the first step is to relate the map to everyday places: schools, stops, walking routes and squares. An even distribution of new trees is not necessarily the most useful distribution of shade.
We then assess existing canopies, paving, available soil and water pathways. That provides a basis for deciding what to retain, where to open up the ground and which planting can remain viable over time.
Sources and limitations
Original images: Bruno Jelinić / Herbafertil, Google Earth Engine archive — Međimurje. Basemap attribution is preserved. The exports lack a complete record of acquisition dates, selected layers and numerical legends. They are qualitative illustrations, without exact temperature claims or claims of change between dates.
Numerical comparison requires the source layers, common scales, dates and valid-data masks. LST is not air temperature, and NDVI alone does not distinguish tree canopy from crops or grass.
